What to Expect at Your First Pelvic Health Appointment
Congratulations on taking the first step towards improving your pelvic health! We know it can be intimidating coming for a pelvic floor assessment but our goal at Full Moon is to make the experience comfortable and positive all the way through.
Your initial assessment typically involves a lot of talking at the beginning. We will gather a detailed history from you including details about your medical history, pregnancies and deliveries and pelvic floor concerns (including bowel, urinary and sexual function). We recognize your comfort level for discussing many of these topics may vary so we welcome you to take your time and share your story with us in your own words. The more information you are willing to share with your physiotherapist the better we will be able to help you. Trust us - there is no such thing as TMI in pelvic floor physio!
After we have finished talking, your physiotherapist will provide you with a recommendation for the physical assessment. One of the most common questions we get asked is if an internal exam is necessary. If your primary concern is related to your pelvic floor, we will usually recommend an internal vaginal and/or rectal exam. Your therapist will get the most accurate information and be able to give you the best treatment possible by performing an internal exam however, this is always optional. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible while getting treatment for your pelvic floor and there is plenty of treatment that can be done externally. That means if you are currently not ready for an internal pelvic exam, we can wait and do it at a later session or even never - it’s completely up to you.
After the assessment, we will discuss our findings with you and come up with a personalized treatment plan to help you reach your goals. Your treatments may include hands on manual therapy in clinic, education about your concerns, as well as activity modifications and corrective exercises for at home. Your physiotherapist will take the time to answer all your questions and make sure you are feeling well supported in the treatment plan.
Please note that our physio’s have taken limited training on male pelvic floor treatment and therefore we are not currently accepting new clients for male pelvic health concerns. If you are looking for support in this area, please contact us so that we can refer you to the right practitioners to address your concerns.
If you have any questions that weren’t answered here please feel free to contact us.
